Cyprus

Kids finished school, early in Germany, so on 13th June we all took a flight to Larnaca in Cyprus. Four hours on a RyanAir plane. Not the most comfortable experience, much like how sheep must feel being herded together into a confined space. So we left a coldish Düsseldorf for a much warmer Cyprus. Was like being in a hot air dryer when we got off the plane. Very hot and windy.

We had hired a car through Avis, and after a bit of searching around in the heat of the car park managed to find our fine new car. Except it wasn’t fine, or new. In fact it had to be the oldest, dirtiest, most crap car I’ve ever been in, yet alone hired. Headlights looked like they’d been sandblasted, windscreen wipers merely moved water around the windscreen when trying to clean it, and it struggled big time to go over 100km/h (62mph). But, after a 2 hour drive we did get to our villa in Paphos, and very nice it was too, own pool, well equipped, view of the sea only 200m away. Nice.

Hadn’t realised how English Cyprus was, expensive, but saw a Next and a Debenhams, fish and chip shops. England in the sun. Full of chavs I thought.

Anyway, first trip out to see the local sights was to the Tomb of Kings, about 10 minutes drive away. It looks pretty derelict, many of the tombs resemble no more than concrete bunkers, which they are sort of. But they are basically the final resting place of a group of aristocrats that lived and died in Paphos around 300BC. It is a World Cultural Heritage site. There is no official tour there, just a book and walk around.

Went to the beach one of the days; found a nice shady spot under a parasol, whilst the day after we took a short trip up the mountain to see the ‘Adonis Baths’. Not too sure what we were expecting, but we passed some goats crossing the road on the way,Goats in the Road and followed the windiest road you’ll ever drive along. Bumpy, steep, pivot holed and very dusty. But made it to this really exciting sign which must have meant we had arrived. Adonis Baths Sign

But, despite the dodgy road and uninspiring sign it was actually very nice. Adonis Baths

So we spent a while there. A couple of very cold pools to swim in, nice and shaded and the place was surrounded by various statues, some with rather large ‘appendages’ which I did manage to get the names of eventually, thanks to Google.

Pottered around the villa for a few days, chilling by the pool. Had a few BBQ’s in the evening as eating out seemed quite expensive. But we did find a nice Mexican restaurant we liked and went there a couple of times. Not very ‘local’ though is it, mexican food? But have to say wasn’t that impressed by the local fare.

But seeing as there wasn’t a huge amount to do in Cyprus, except to relax, we did find another waterfall a couple of hours away with a nice trail to walk along a river. So decided that was worth a day trip. And it was nice. Good walk through the woods to a waterfall that I wasn’t too sure you could stand under. Water looked a bit deep. Nice and cool there though in the shade. Caledonia Falls

Spent much of my time messing around with my camera, taking photos of basically anything. Took 422 in total narrowing it down to 37 by the time I’d finished. But, having said that, there were a lot of dragonfly’s around and managed to get a great shot of this red one. Probably got some fancy latin name. Dragonfly

So we had a good week. Quite relaxing, hot but the pool was nice to cool down in. And we all got a little sun tanned.

Family Visit

Mum, Dad, my sister and her baby came to stay for a week. Was really nice to have them around. They took care of themselves mostly; the folks going to Prague for a couple of days whilst my sister stayed here. Went on lots of walks, to the lake, Kaiserswerth.

Caroline my sister stayed at home with me mostly. Polly is cute, Polly

But she wasn’t too impressed going down the slide

But much happier by the time mealtime came round in the restaurant one evening.

Croatia

April 19th we took a flight from Düsseldorf (Weeze) to Trieste, Italy for a week in a lovely villa in Croatia. Picked up the car at the airport, a Lancia no less, don’t get those in the UK, and started what we thought was an hour drive to Motovun, the village we’re staying at. However, without satnav, no decent map, it’s dark and we’re wearing sunglasses (that bit’s not true) it took us over 2 hours to get to the villa. Motovun Villa

Following morning, nice and sunny, not too hot though, around 21 degrees, we spent the day in and around Motovun. Jamie tried the pool, lasted around 10 seconds before getting out; way too cold he says. He may have been right, I put my feet in for a while, felt them again about 2 hours later. So we took a walk up the hill toward the main village,

Motovun

quite a climb in the sun, but we stopped on the way for many photo opportunities. Tom and Jamie resting:

We passed a lovely little house, with a cat sat outside, flowers, table, and in the setting sun just looked perfect. So, another photo opportunity.

Found our way to the top, eventually, through the many narrow, cobbled streets, and at the top we found a bar, great. Fabulous views all around from up there, so decided that was the best place for a beer or two and something to eat. Well, it was dinner time.

Motovun

and after a few beers, which Jane enjoyed tremendously

Jane and Beer

we took a walk around the wall at the top before heading back home.

Next day, another sunny one, we headed down to a village by the sea (Adriatic) to a place called Rovinj. Which build by the Venicians was just like Venice, but a fraction of the cost.

Rovinj

We wandered the narrow streets,

Rovinj

up to the church at the top, did some shopping, ate and drank more beer (very cheap here) before heading home for an evening BBQ and yet more beer from a very nice 2 litre bottle at the expensive cost of about £2.

BBQ

We found a nice little town only 15 minutes away, called Grosnjan, right on top of a hill, that was apparently abandoned until the mid 1960′s when some artists moved in and renovated the town. Now it’s full of small art galleries, craft shops and a lovely cafe.

Grosnjan

Jane and Liz bought some hand made jewellery and I of course went to potter about and take some photos, and of course, drink coffee. (Did I mention I love coffee?)

We also visited Pula, on the south coast of Istria, again by the sea but we found it a little disappointing after some of the other places we’d been to. There wasn’t much to see there except for the colosseum, built in 27 BC – 68 AD

Pula Colosseum

It’s a very old town of course, over 2000 years old, having been controlled by the Romans, Venician, France, Hungary, Austria and Italy.

Finally we went to Porec, almost 2000 years old and set by the sea and protected from the sea by the small island of Saint Nicholas/San Nicolo. Some nice shops to look at, old buildings as is the norm here, and plenty of beaches.

Porec Boats

We did some shopping, kids bought some T-Shirts, Tom with the ‘I’m with Stupid’ writing on, Jame bought one saying ‘You look better on Facebook’. Not sure how those will go down at school. Weather was nice though so we did at least dip our feet in the water, way to cold for swimming though.

Then, time to leave Croatia, back to Trieste and the flight back to Germany. Nice holiday though. Recommended.

Koblenz

Well we organised someone to look after the kids, so Jane and I could explore a little of the neighbouring cities and decided Koblenz was a decent shout for a visit. Old, pretty, near on the Rhine and Mosel rivers, decent shops etc. We headed on down from Düsseldorf on the Saturday morning having booked a nice hotel on the Rhine overlooking the town and one of the many historic buildings. Koblenz
We wandered the streets for a while, did some shopping, and visited the Deutsches Eck, where the Mosel meets Rhine, statue there etc, Koblenz
It was a nice town, lots of churches, squares and narrow streets, and what seemed to be a statue of Super Mario of Nintendo fame, though I’m sure it wasn’t; never did read the plaque. Koblenz

On the way home on we took a detour to Königswinter, a beautiful town on the Rhine with a castle and Schloss Drachenburg. We took the cable train up to the top of the hill overlooking the town, to see the castle. Way too steep to walk up, but we walked back down. The castle wasn’t the best to look at to be honest, not much left of it. No doubt my youngest, Jamie, would say “it’s just a pile of bricks”, which I suppose it was. But we walked down anyway and planned on taking some photos of the Schloss, but that cost extra, so we had to make do with this photo taken through the railings at the back. Drachenburg in Königswinter It’s a beautiful building by all accounts, and from photo’s we’ve seen elsewhere. Never mind. But I did manage to get to play with my camera on an old building we found on the way back and play around with it afterwards. Drachenburg in Königswinter

Walked around the village a while, coffee, ice cream etc. Nice place, recommended to visit.

Austria

So, school Ski Week came, or half term as everywhere else seems to call it, so 13 of us all piled on down to Austria for the week. By thirteen of us I mean us lot, the Mathias-Ball’s family, Jools Sillito and family and her friends, total 13.

We had booked a nice chalet near Kaprun, sleeping 14, which on arrival was very nice, better than expected, lots of space, nice big log fire and a wonderful view out from the back garden. Took a photo the first morning just as the sun came up. Austria - Kaprun

First days skiing wasn’t the best, snow was starting to melt, Jamie lost a glove from a new pair he’d had for a grand total of 3 hours, and the last run of the day ended in an uphill walk. So, the next day Jamie, myself and the girls (Jools excepted) went to Salzburg for the day instead. Not been there before, very nice town, and very cold that day, but sunny. Austria - Salzburg

Walked past Mozart’s birthplace Austria - Salzburg and down the many narrow streets and small squares. Found a shop that only sold eggs, (easter type) and christmas decorations. Never seen to many eggs in one place, massive shop. Austria - Salzburg

Rest of the week was spent on the glacier in Kaprun. The peak being 3km up. But plenty of runs down the glacier, many red and blue runs and fair few blacks. Tom found himself doing the black runs by the end of the week. The first day up there I managed to burn my face, I think from spending too long sitting outside at the bottom of a quite steep red run, drinking beer and coffee. Austria - Kaprun

Dewi, dressed in black turned out to be a very good boarder. Jay said he looked like ‘Evil Stig’ from Topgear. Austria - Kaprun . So after a couple of days skiing I swapped my ski’s for a snowboard and Andy and Dewi gave me some tips as I’d not done more than 6 hours snowboarding before.

Took the ski lift one day up to the very top, 3000 metres up, and skiied down, took a while but worth it. And on the second last day we got a bit of snow up there. Arrived when the lift opened at 8am, got to the top and it was blowing a gale up there, snowing lightly, very cold. But the sun soon came out and we found ourselves just on top of the cloud, a very pretty site with the cloud making it feel like crystals were falling. Photo doesn’t do it justice. Austria - Kaprun

So a good week was had by all, the non-skiers spent most of the time at the wellness spa, getting massages, swimming etc. In fact on the last day Andy and I both got massages to try and get rid of those aches – didn’t work, but the masseur was very nice, about 20, blond, female of course, I could go on, but won’t……. will only get me into trouble.
