Brixham Sailing Weekend

Tom and I went back to the UK for a few days, with the intention of going down to Brixham for a sailing weekend on Mum and Dad’s sailing boat, together with my sister Caroline and Polly, her daughter. We arrived on the Friday just in time for fish and chips in the town. Very nice. I miss that. So having unloaded our stuff on the boat, we headed into the town.

The fish and chips were awesome. Sat outside the pub next door and at those with live music from a local guitarist to listen too; along with the seagulls. Slept well that night, even sharing with Tom.

The next day, Saturday, weather was a bit changeable, bit windy, cloudy, sunny, but no rain. So we set off for Dartmouth. Not a bad trip, though Mum and Dad did seem rather worried at one point

until the sun came out

so we got a little burnt. Well I did, and Dad rather more than me.

We passed a small fishing boat on the way.

Eventually arriving in Dartmouth, where we didn’t stop in the end, wind was picking up and it was rather busy, so we turned around and headed back, with the wind, which was picking up now, behind us. So we got back to Brixham much faster.

As we slowed down when we got closer we decided to try a little fishing. Tom with the line of 6 hooks to catch mackerel, and me with what can only be described as a small metal fish, a rusty one at that, with a hook in the end. At the end of a fishing rod and line. So i cast that off the end of the boat as we travelled at about 1 knot, and Tom threw his line over the edge. Now I have to say my line i think, with no weight on the end, probably just floated along the top of the sea. So I caught diddly squat. Tom on the other hand had fish jumping onto the hooks. No sooner had he cast out and he was pulling back in again. On first cast he hooked 3 fish within minutes. All in all he caught 9 mackerel in about 15 minutes. Which we put back in the sea.

We ate out at a local curry house with plans to do some proper fishing tomorrow. Weather permitting.

Sunday arrived, weather was nice so we bought some fishing tackle to look for Bass or Pollock, and planned to head out in the evening when they feed and see what happens. However, about 30 mins before we planned to go the wind picked up so we had to postpone that plan, and instead walked over to the beach to watch the RNLI sea rescue drill. That was good

Dinner on the boat that night, our last night. Mum cooked, and very nice it was too. We headed back to the airport early the next day, but Tom and I both really enjoyed our weekend by the sea.
